Enhancing Sustainable Use of the Shared Resources of Marine Area Adjacent to the Sarstoon Temash National Park
The goal of the project is ?to contribute to the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity resources of Amatique Bay adjacent to the Sarstoon Temash National Park in the Gulf of Honduras?. Amatique Bay in the Gulf of Honduras is a shared transboundary water body in the Caribbean Sea and is part of the broader Caribbean Large Marine Ecosystem (LME). The goal of the project fits within the global geographic focus of the GEF SGP for Operational Phase 4 under the International Waters Focal Area and within the thematic focus of ?coastal area management and biodiversity?.

Funding from the GEF SGP will be used to train and assist community members to demarcate, assess and maintain three shrimp nurseries for improved management of the marine resources in the area and to enhance knowledge of the fisher folks on the status of the shrimp resources in the nurseries.

The expected results are:
? Three shrimp nursery sites will be permanently demarcated.
? Twelve community fisher folks will be trained in installation and maintenance of mooring buoys.
? A baseline and database for shrimp resource in the marine area adjacent to the STNP, (both in the conservation areas and outside) will be created.
? Thirty community marine resource users in Belize will have knowledge of the status and importance of the shrimp nurseries.
