Fish farming as an alaternative source of income to poaching and wild animals in the Selous Niassa wildlife Corridor
The Selous-Niassa Miombo Woodlands of Southern Tanzania and Northern Mozambique are one of the largest and for the global biodiversity most significant, trans-boundary natural ecosystem in Africa. The Selous-Niassa Wildlife Corridor serves as migratory route between the Selous and the Niassa Game Reserves hosting the world?s largest elephant, buffalo and sable populations. The corridor and the biological resources in it are under threat from land clearing for arable use as well as unauthorized wildlife off-takes for local consumption and poaching for ivory at a transboundary scale. There is also habitat degradation in the corridor due to uncontrolled and destructive wildfires caused by the local population. At the Selous-Niassa mid term evaluation in 2007, it was recommended that GEF/SGP be engaged to support capacity building efforts at the community level as a way of developing income generating activities that promote improved conservation of resources in the project area. Specifically, the evaluation recommended fisheries development activities as projects that may have broad impact in the area. This project proposal on fish farming was developed in response to this recommendation.
