Decontamination of Mangrove Natural Reserves in Red Sea

Project activities:
1. Conducting a study to determine the levels of pollution and to identify the needs and objectives
2- Removing the oil stains on the mangrove trees through a substance called Mycelex
3. Implementing a training program on Decontamination of Mangroves for a number of youth from civil society organizations
3. Designing a broad media plan to raise awareness as to methods of protecting decontaminated areas and ensuring that the pollution does not recur

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

- 75 students attended a training workshop on the clean up of solid wastes in protected areas - 300 students attended seminars aimed at teaching the value of mangroves as part of the coastal ecosystem and the importance of preserving them in a responsible manner - Research was conducted on removal of oil stains from the mangrove and the trials with Mycelex succeeded in removing the pollution

Notable Community Participation

- Community members, including students, attended a seminar led by environmental experts. Participants were educated on the importance of preserving mangrove ecosystems - Students participated in a clean up of solid wastes from a defined mangrove enclosure

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

- Mangrove trees are home to a large variety of fish species and migratory sites for birds. The matter and energy from their fallen leaves form the basis of important marine food chains.By removing the oil pollution on the mangrove trees, the mangrove ecosystem is preserved. - Mangroves protect coral reefs which are a touristic revenue generation for the Red Sea area

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

- Three seminars were held for 300 students on: 1- the importance of maintaining biodiversity in the coastal areas of Egypt 2- the value of mangroves vis a vis the coastal ecosystem - Poster, flyers, clean-up guides were distributed - Competitions were encouraged as part of the environmental awareness raising initiatives

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

-The Ministry of Environment provided co-financing - Technical support was given as an in-kind contribution

Project sustainability

-Through the promotion of community based nature conservation activity, mangrove rehabilitation activities can be sustained - The trials with the substance Mycelex proved that oil pollution stains can be removed and the mangroves sustained

Gender Focus

A large number of female students attended the workshop and seminars

Planning gef grant

Officials from the Ministry of Environment have expressed interest in repeating this project in other areas and obtaining the required funding

Replication of project activities

The Ministry of Environment plans to increase the number of mangroves and to continue mangrove rescue activities extending it to other areas of the Red Sea
