Biogas units in Minia

The project sought to promote biogas technology in El Minia, one of Egypt's poorer governorates in upper Egypt. Through community participation, 20 biogas units were constructed in 7 villages.
Activities included:
- Holding seminars for the villagers to promote the concept of clean alternative energy and to explain the activities of the project
- Raising the awareness of women to the dangers of poor hygiene habits in the household and sensitizing them to the concept of clean energy and to the issue of climate change
- Training of youth through a number of workshops on how to construct and maintain biogas units

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

- Community members, among them 50 women, participated in 7 environmental awareness raising seminars - A number of youth were selected for the training workshops on biogas unit construction and maintenance

Capacity - Building Component

- Training of youth on the construction and maintenance of biogas units - Training of women on the operation of the biogas units - Raising the awareness of women to the importance of a clean environment and its contribution to the health and well being of the family

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

- With biogas technology women save on the cost of gas bottles thus enhancing their household allowance - Alleviating the levels of toxic gas emissions within the house creates a healthier environment, lessening the incidents of disease - With improved living conditions, women have more time and resources to dedicate on meeting needs in other areas - The project created 26 job opportunities in total: 2 for females, and 24 for male youths

Gender Focus

-The project encouraged the participation of women in all the seminars held. The environmental awareness raising component was incorporated into the 26 ongoing literacy classes for women taking place in the village - Women were given training on the operation of the biogas units

Project sustainability

-Using the financial method of a revolving fund guarantees the project's sustainability - The training of youth on the construction and maintenance of biogas units allows for the sustainability of the project

Planning non gef grant

CIDA has committed to funding this project for implementation in surrounding villages

Policy Influence

Disseminating the use of biogas technology throughout rural villages in Egypt will serve as a paradigm for future replication throughout the country

Replication of project activities

Project activities will be replicated in surrounding villages through other grant funding

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The 7 seminars succeeded in educating the local community on global environmental issues and particularly on climate change.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project was successfully implemented through a revolving fund. The organization succeeded in accessing further grant funding for the replication of this project in surrounding villages
