Fish Offal’s recycling as organic fertilizer in Bier Ali, Shabwah Governorate
Bier Ali Village is located in the proximity of Bier Ali Protected area on the Arabian Sea Coast of Yemen. The village is a main fish receiving market for large number of fishermen from Shabwah Governorate. Fish offal?s of processed fish is a problem when thrown in the open landscape or on the coast especially in high fishing seasons. Community complains of the bad smell of decaying fish offal?s invading their homes and every where in the village surroundings.
The Coastal Women Society is a local NGO proposed putting an end to their suffering by collecting the offal?s and composting to convert them into organic fertilizer that could bring three advantages which are: Alleviating the source of bad smell; Allow local women to gain income from selling the organic fertilizer for farmers and provide farmers with high quality rich phosphorus and nitrogen organic fertilizer for their farms replacing chemical fertilizer. The project will help building the capacity for local women in project management, marketing and organic farming.
