Conservation and Protection of Black Bear & associated biodiversity through community participation in Phub Range, District Kuzdar, Balochistan
Conservation and Protection of Black Bear & associated biodiversity through community participation in Phub Range, District Kuzdar, Balochistan
The project responds directly to ongoing dialogue and recommendations of the GEF Council related to GEF investment in the biodiversity focal area and results from GEFSEC monitoring and evaluation of the GEF biodiversity portfolio (e.g. Biodiversity Program Study). Balochistan, the largest province of Pakistan, has a rich floral and faunal diversity. Despite its global importance it has never been explored in detail nor been managed properly. The main threat to the Black Bear Population in the area is that persecution by the people of the area. Bears are usually killed when they are found predating on goats and their kids. Generally no bear parts are used but a few people keep some of it?s for relieving rheumatic pains.

The main factor leading to depletion of the species is lack of awareness in the communities about the importance of the species. The major reason for killing of the species is its predation on livestock, particularly goats. The increased availability of modern guns has further exacerbated the situation.
Key Objectives of the project are:
1. Protect and conserve potential hotspots and development of management agreements
2. Develop participatory management models for conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
3.Diversify and improve rural livelihoods and reduce pressure on selected hotspots.
4.Raise awareness of local communities and stakeholders about biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.
5.Capacity building of the local stakeholders in Natural Resource Management

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
Social Mobilization is a perquisite to any participatory project. This is especially true when it comes to conservation of wildlife. This project will organize communities to cultivate a sense of ownership about the Black Bears and other flora and fauna of the area. Terms of partnership will be signed between the communities and the project about the implementation of the, assigning clear responsibilities to both the communities and the project management. Infrastructural schemes will also be provided that clearly links with conservation objectives. Community activists will be trained as grassroots extensionists and development agents
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The area is rich in medicinal plants that are not being commercially exploited. The project will try to initiate sustainable harvesting of some of the important medicinal plants and marketing them commercially to generate additional income. Other plants like Mazri/Pesh (Nannorhps ritchieana) are being traditionally use in manufacturing mats, roofing for temporary residences and ropes, while Tecoma (Tecumla undulate) species will also be propagated & their flowers will be marketed. Traditionally beautiful handicrafts are also made of Mazri/Pesh Green marketing of these products on sustainable basis can provide additional income. Traditionally, the women of the area make beautiful carpets from wool. This is another area that could be developed into an income generation activity. Firewood is the main source of energy. Wild olive and woody shrubs are used as fuel. The introduction of fuel- efficient stoves will help in reduction of pressure on these resources.
