Plantation and Conservation of Mangroves in Kharochan through Community Participation
Plantation and Conservation of Mangroves in Kharochan through Community Participation
The coastal areas of Sindh Province, and its people, are highly challenged by poverty and environmental degradation; vulnerable because of limited social services and are prone to disasters (World Bank Socio-economic Study 2004). Spread over 17,355 square kilometers, Thatta is today the second least developed districts of Sindh. The total area of the Kharochhan is 235485 Acres extended in 43 Dehs (Revenue Village). Out of these 31 Dehs are under sea water with sparse population living on some islands. While remaining 12 Dehs are one or the other way are degraded by the inundation and waves of the sea water which has turned 170,267 acres of agricultural land into uncultivable land. As a result, the cultivable land is left only 65644 acres. The overall environment is dependant on plants specifically the Mangrove plants-the nursery and habitat of biodiversity. Project aims to conserve mangrove through direct plantation and promoting energy efficient stoves in the area to reduce rate of deforestation of mangroves.
