Diversification of Livelihoods of Fisherfolks and Promotion of Natural Resources Conservation at Sandspit
Mangrove ecosystem is one of the globally important ecosystems with significant biodiversity and conservation values. Mangrove ecosystem performs both productive and protective functions by contributing directly to the livelihoods of dependent communities through wood, fodder and by protecting their life and properties against the natural hazards. It also performs various underlying ecological functions and possesses values for education, research, ecotourism and as a nursery ground for shrimp and fisheries. Unfortunately, these values get unaccounted in the conventional accounting systems but, they contribute significantly to the livelihoods of the dependent communities and sustenance of various ecological processes. These values are subject to various internal and external threats due to ignorance and less recognition.
The proposed project is aimed at enhancing these conservation values of mangrove ecosystem by contributing to the awareness raising among the visitors and local communities through mangrove-based ecotourism so as to enhance support for their sustainable use and conservation both at the community and macro levels.
Specific Objectives of the project are:
Objective 1: Community-based income generating activities contribute to the livelihood improvement of the fisherfolks and promote natural resources conservation at Sandspit.
Objective 2: Environmental awareness contributes to enforcement of environmental regulations and reduction of industrial pollution in the Lyari River
