Conservation of the Genetic Makeup of the Barbados Blackbelly Sheep & Improvement of the Marketing Opportunities to the Industry.
This project will assist the conservation of the genes of the Barbados Black Belly Sheep, an indigenous species to Barbados, through a strategy which engages small and poor farmers in their effective management. Among the outputs of the project will be the establishment of a Breeding Society, the development of standards and guidelines for the management of the species, and the establishment of ten demonstration farms owned and managed by the project participants where high standards of sheep husbandry will be practised. In addition, the grantee aspires to register The Barbados Black Belly Sheep logo and thus establishing it as the intellectual property of Barbados. This project is also expected to promote the conservation and sustainable use of agrobiodiveristy in Barbados.
