Conservation of Birds in Namibia
Conservation of Birds in Namibia
Global significant biodiversity loss is taking place in the project area due to current natural resource (land-use) management and current livelihood practices. In order to address the problem of biodiversity loss, the project will focus on promoting more active participation by local people in the conservation of their avian biodiversity, and obtaining sustainable benefits for people derived from the project, such as conserving their environment through awareness, and improving livelihoods through low-key income generating ventures, e.g. promoting bird based ecotourism, guide training and other SMMEs.

There are two main project objectives (with an overlap between various aspects):
1. Education/awareness
2. Capacity building/economic development

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Globally significant biodiversity loss is taking place in the project area due to current natural resource (land-use) management, the current livelihood situation, the sensitivity of the ecosystems concerned and the socio-economic situation. This loss is compounded by an over-arching lack of awareness and/or of a conservation ethic, and a lack of ownership of natural resources. As Namibia has a rich diversity of avifauna that is threatened in many ways, the project aims to focus on this aspect of biodiversity conservation as a means of promoting conservation in the broader sense.
Notable Community Participation
In order to address the above problem of biodiversity loss, the project will focus strongly on promoting more active participation by local people in the conservation of their avian biodiversity, and on means of obtaining sustainable benefits for people derived from the project (such as conserving their environment through awareness, and improving livelihoods through low-key income generating ventures, e.g. promoting bird-based ecotourism, guide training and other SMMEs).The groups will be co-ordinated by the Namibia Bird Conservation Working Group.
