Kalinago Youth Empowerment Initiative.
The Carib Reserve is home to approximately 3000 indigenous Carib Residents. The reservation was established in 1903 by the then British Governor Sir Hesketh Bell. The Carib Territory home to the indigenous peoples has the highest level of poverty on island far above the national average. It is identified as one of the islands vulnerable groups "Members of such groups may be geographically disbursed across the island and not residing in any one spatially defined community. These groups are considered vulnerable because of their reduced capacity to with the effects of economic shocks and natural disasters.
The Kalinago heritage Society is formed by participants in a UNESCO Youth Path project who received training in the conservation and production of medicilan plants and herbs. After the project ended they decided to remain as a group and extend the project to mainstream herbs and spices market.
The objectives of th eproject include:
1.Training in research, documentation and analysis of data of traditionally used herbs by the Kalinago people.
2.Training in micro business management, cultivation, processing, packaging and marketing of herbs, processing and packaging of fruit p
3.Cultivation of 10 acres of land in medicinal plants
4.Public Awareness on the preservation of nature?s bio diversity as well as our rich and distinct cultural heritage.
The project will also serve as a deterent to the common mairation of Carib Yuths from the Carib territory in search of opportunities outside of the territory. First nation teas will bring back the pride of place of the once great Carib worrior nation
