Community capacity building to actively engage in safety and protection management in Leuser Mountain National Park zone
Ecological Threat:

The LPT institution was founded in 2001, in a period where illegal-logging activities was still engaged by the community inside the National Park zone in Tangkahan. Tangkahan was also a vulnerable site for illegal logging within the Leuser Mountain National Park. LPT was an organization founded by the local Tangkahan community, which initiated the seed of big transitional movement from the destructive logging community towards the present naturalist community. The main actor of the illegal logging which would be the big logging-tycoon mobs and several ex-convict who were involved within illegal logging trade, later was included in this preservation project. The redemption agenda of the illegal logging actor have been distributed and strategize in the program for the community and also the agenda of ecotourism as a long-term plan.

Goals:
To develop the Tangkahan community capacity and neighbour villages within the Leuser Mountain National Park and enhancing the participatory mechanism for National Park safety which will be integrated with integrated ecotourism program.

OBJECTIVES:
LPT realize the ecotourism development effort in Tangkahan was not without risk for the environment and natural preservation within the forest protection in Tangkahan. Lesson-learned from the misconcept of the ecotourism development in Bukit Lawang, a back-up plan is needed to anticipate tby increasing education component in community and visitor to make sure the ecotourism development have no negative impact towards the National Park preservation.
Further, the ecotourism development activities should be one of the way to guarantee the sustainability of the community-based forest protection program in Tangkahan.

Activities:

[1] Design and application of safety-zone integrated program adjascent to ecotourism development by creating a strategic trekking pathways which later integratred to the patrol road and forest monitoring, [2] basic training for the taskforce in forest protection,
[3] Community gathering on the Leuser management

Expected Output:

One of the output for the community gathering is to formulate an independent taskforce consisted of 20 members for NationaL Park forest protection, from the community memberd in 20 villages.
