Integrated Participatory Domestic Elephant Waste Management in Chitwan National Park
Sauraha, one of the very popular tourist hubs of Chitwan National Park, a total of 135 existing private and park elephants produce 17.5MT of waste every day. These waste are seen even in roads and dumped in a place called ?Malkhad? and left to dry naturally. The dried dung is then burned emitting CO2 in the atmosphere. The waste is also leached to river polluting and affecting fresh water ecosystem.The main objective of the project is to manage elephant waste efficiently by vermicomposting in participatory approach with local bodies .

Different types of vermi composting training were given to local communities.
Project sustainability
Since the production of both the vermis (earthworm) and vermicompost are ongoing and farmers can sell both the product with ease, the project activities are still ongoing.
