I Leadership Meeting: Toward a Coalition of Indigenous Peoples in the Cerrado
Mobilization and coordination among Cerrado indigenous peoples is sought by this project, aimed at defense of territories and common interests, as well as development of coordinated activities for protection of their territories, access to natural resources and appreciation of their cultures. To this end, the first Meeting of Cerrado Indigenous Leaders is proposed for September, 2006, in Brasília. The objective is to integrate 30 different ethnic groups into the discussion over a political agenda and planning of a wide process for mobilizing Cerrado Indigenous Peoples. Indigenous lands, the largest areas with standing Cerrado, are squeezed by rapid expansion of the agricultural frontier, suffering drastic impacts of deforestation in their surroundings and pollution of headwaters. In this context, environmental degradation threatens the foundations for material and symbolic survival of Cerrado indigenous peoples, adding to the losses in biodiversity and priceless cultural losses. Coordination of the peoples in this situation is urgent and the focus of this project
