Developing Alternative Agriculture in Bustan `Ayn al-Tibeh
Developing Alternative Agriculture in Bustan `Ayn al-Tibeh
The project aims at restoring the biodiversity in the project area, in addition to addressing desertification of soil due to water scarcity, by developing a new agricultural system that guarantees the possibility of good land investment within economical irrigation capabilities. This will be achieved through development and investment in medicinal/fragrant plant agriculture, while paying special attention to wild plants that spread in surrounding mountains. This will also contribute in combating poverty and unemployment.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
the community participation will be acheived through the close cooperation between Bustan `Ayn al-Tibeh and the Convent. Bustan `Ayn al-Tibeh is the biggest collective farm in Qarah, with over 200 owning families and a land area that exceeds 2,000 dunums. Centuries ago, the Bustan group was formed thanks to the social code of `Ayn al-Tibeh. For a long time, Deir Mar Ya`kub was the primary actor in relation to the group and helping it address problems of livelihood. The convent takes the lead in caring for Bustan `Ayn al-Tibeh, the Roman channels, and agricultural development. With the exception of the convent itself, which owns 350 dunums, the range of landownership in BATAG is 15.8 - 120 dunums. The activities of landowners are as follows: 31%: agriculture 14%: state employees and agriculture 14%: agricultural products (eggs, livestock) and agriculture 28%: retired/pensioners, supplementing their income with agricultural or quasi-agricultural activities.
