Linking Indigenous Knowledge and Markets for Biodiversity Conservation: New Opportunities for Women in Tswapong.
Kgetsi ya Tsie Tswapong Hills Women's Resource Enterprise Community Trust (KyT) aims at enhancing the capacity of KyT women in packaging and competitive marketing of veld products especially the morula products. The activities undertaken will contribute to improvement of livelihoods in the rural areas, alleviation of poverty, generation of household income, creation of jobs and overall economy of Botswana. Linking the indigenous knowledge base of natural resources such as morula products to the international markets will create incentives for the sustainable use and conservation of natural resources through women participation.

The project will further contribute to development and diversification strategies to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. The local, regional and international markets for promotion of morula products will enable KyT to employ sustainable strategies for collection, processing, value adding and marketing of the products while benefiting from income generation, employment and skills enhancement. In addition, it will enhance opportunities for incorporating morula tree in farming system through agro-forestry. This will provide wide selection of options as morula is a multi-purpose tree hence plays a vital role in the introduction of high value alternative crops. Grafted morula plants are available at Veld Products Research and Development and could be incorporated in the farming system thereby giving farmers an option for early bearing (maturing) varieties.
