Eradicating of Prosopis trees in the Nossob River area
Project Objectives are 1. Control and manage the spread of the Prosopis tree in the Nossob area 2. Improve the rangeland condition of the Nossob area 3. Improve employment for local community, and increase sustainable livelihoods
The project seeks to address the invasive species, the Prosopis trees in the Nossob River bed in Amunuis Constituency of the Omaheke region. Prosopis trees have invaded the Nossob River bed and are reducing the grazing area available to communal farmers to sustain their livelihood. These trees mainly grow along watercourses, where they produce huge amounts of pods and seeds. These seeds rapidly outgrow natural Kalahari tree species such as the Acacias, thus endangering the natural habitat and ecosystems of the Nossib River. Furthermore, these trees also take up a huge amount of water per tree per day, posing a threat to our underground water courses.
The project proposal is to manage the invasive species, and use the initiative to improve local livelihood through manufacture furniture, flooring and various other products from the Prosopis tree, and selling byproducts of firewood and charcoal.
The project will be based in the Omaheke Region in the Amunius Constituency. The office and factory will be in the small village of Leonardville, located 140 km south of Gobabis and 90 km North of Aranos, known as the Kalahari. This area has one of the highest concentration of Prosopis trees in Southern Africa.
