Marine Science Educational Outreach
Program – Raising awareness of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System – World Heritage Site at Standard 5 level of primary schools of Belize District
The goal of this COMPACT project is to increase awareness of the marine environment of the BBRRS-WHS through the engagement of one sector of the Belize general public ? Standard Five students in 75 target primary schools classes in the Belize District. This goal has been developed from lessons learned during the successful implementation of the Pilot Project (September 2004/ June 2006), as the first phase of a long-term Program that will eventually reach all schools throughout Belize. This will be achieved through the strengthening and further development of the HPFoundation?s ?Marine Science Educational Outreach Program?, which includes a series of inter-related activities to be delivered from August, 2006 to August, 2007. There are:
- Two Marine Science Teachers Training workshops for teachers participating in the HPFoundation Marine Science Educational Outreach Program,
- Development, acquisition and dissemination of the HPFoundation Teachers Toolboxes of resource materials to assist teachers in implementing the Marine Science Student Workbooks in the Classroom and complement the Marine Science Educational Outreach Program,
- Printing and dissemination of Marine Science Student Workbooks to schools participating in the HPFoundation Marine Science Educational Outreach Program,
- Educational field trips to Spanish Bay Conservation and Research Centre (SBCRC) for participating students and teachers, to reinforce the HPFoundation Marine Science Educational Outreach Program,
- Providing mechanisms for increasing awareness beyond the focal group through student participation in the first Belize Marine Science Bowl , and in the Marine Science Poster Competition and
- Strengthening support for the participating schools through the development of the Belize Marine Science Educators Network - two networking workshops for teachers, to provide opportunities for exchange of ideas and information.
