Bison Land - A Model for Biodiversity Conservation
Bison Land - A Model for Biodiversity Conservation
The project aims to contribute environment benefits by promoting the presence of bison as an element of sustainable development in the Neamt mountains. The process of reinstating the status of freedom for the bison in the reference area involves the communities, local authorities and relevant NGOs in the area in biodiversitiy conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. The project establishes a functional and efficient system for the management of offals as an innovative mechanism for this microregion, which significantly reduces the anthropogenic effects on some areas of the forest ecosystem.

Project Characteristics and Results
Policy Impact
Project will propose a management plan for non timber forest product harvesting and a way to apply it. Because it will be proper not only for forest districts belonging to National Forest Administration, but also for private forest district and processing companies, it can be extended to a national level. The garbage management system will respect the actual legislation and it will represent the first solution for waste in our rural areas. For these reason this system can be also applied anywhere in the country. Because of common involvement of partners ( 5 Local Councils, a Nature Park, an orphanage) a legal recognition of the area as “ Bison Land” is expected.
Project sustainability
The activities will be continued after the project end: - The administration of the Natural Park Vanatori Neamt together with the trained students will continue to monitor the bisons released in liberty; - The the implementation of the management plan for the forest fruit collection was assumed by the local forest authorities - The alternative manual "Bison Land"was included in the school curriculum as optional discipline - The local authorities assumed the maintenance of the waste collection facilities acquired within the project
