LAKE DANAO COMMUNITY-BASED BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION
LAKE DANAO COMMUNITY-BASED BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION
The project aims to undertake community-based activities for the protection and conservation of the biodiversity of the forest around Lake Danao through conscious community participation while contributing to the worldwide efforts addressing environmental protection. The project site is within the Lake Danao National Park (2,193 hectares) and one of the three (3) important watersheds of Ormoc City. The area shall also serve as an outdoor living laboratory, which could help people understand their environment and give clues to ecological processes not yet fully understood. Viable and different ecosystems present shall serve as a research areas/field study especially in productivity, population dynamics and biological diversity. The project is expected to benefit at least 282 upland households.

Notable Community Participation
As a biodiversity conservation effort, the project has to blend with the two organizations in the barangay - The Federation of Free Farmers (FFF) and Lake Danao Farmer's Assoction (LADFA). Since ecotourism will bring in more people under a supervised eco-program, the chances of conservation wll improve. Greter awareness of environmental issues in general and in the area in particular, participation of farmers in environmental activities and training is approximately will have at least 60 percent. Project Objectives: Identify, for conservation efforts, floral and faunal species that are threatened by human settlement and cultivation; Convince farmers/settlers inside the protected forests to stop harmful and unsustainable agricultural practices and when possible, assist them to farm on areas declared to be alienable and disposable; Develop sustainable agriculture in the area through intensive in-farm demonstrations and the establishment of an ecology center in Brgy. Lake Danao for out-farm demonstrations; Enable residents to understand and implement community-based sustainable tourism (CBST).
