GEF/SGP Fourth Biennial Workshop
GEF/SGP Fourth Biennial Workshop
The SGP 'operates on the premise that, where communities and individuals are organised to take action, have a measure of control over access to the natural resource base, have the necessary information and knowledge, and believe that their economic well being is dependent on sound long term management, they will act accordingly and conserve their valuable environmental resources'. Its primary objective is to facilitate community and individual action to address global environmental concerns. To achieve this, the potential actors have to be involved in the programme. This workshop provides a forum for the involvement of the stakeholders.

One of the findings of the GEF/SGP evaluation was that, most of the country programmes did not have well-articulated strategies that could enable the programme to achieve optimum benefits from the limited resources available. Consequently, the consultants recommended that the operational phase should stress the need to formulate strategies that would optimise the impact of the programme. This proposed workshop, is part of the process of reviewing the country strategy.

The GEF/SGP has been in operation for 9 years, and has been continuously critised for not having done much to publicise its activities. The workshop will provide a platform of publicising the programme and sharing lessons learned. A new NSC will also be elected during the workshop.

The workshop will be in Gaborone as most of the invitees reside there. After the workshop the NC will prepare a report and present it to the NSC.
