Preserving the Mason River Protected Area through Eco–Friendly Development and Environmental Awareness Programmes
The primary objective of the project is to conserve the biodiversity of Mason River Protected Area through environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and low maintenance infrastructural development, installation of a boardwalk, and the implementation of a public awareness-building campaign. This project will help the surrounding communities and assist the country in realising goal four (4) of Vision 2030, which speaks to Jamaica as a healthy natural environment. The vision talks about sustainable management and use of environmental and natural resources, hazard risk reduction and adaptation to climate change and sustainable urban and rural development. The goals of the project also align with the mandate of the Clarendon Local Sustainable Development Plan, through strategic objective#11 aimed at increasing environmental awareness, including the knowledge of existing regulations and the benefits of compliance, to encourage environmental stewardship, along with objective #7 which is ensuring that the unique flora and fauna of the parish are maintained. The project will also contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); 1, 6, 7, 11, 13, 15, & 17. Halting biodiversity loss and supporting agricultural productivity through the wetland’s role in cleaning the air, acting as a carbon sink where water helps to irrigate the farms whilst mitigating climate change and creating a sustainable district through partnerships. The expected results will include:

• Hectares of Significant Ecosystems with Improved Conservation Status - through removal of invasive bamboo, creation of livelihood opportunities where the bamboo will be used to construct 1,250 square feet of boardwalk to enhance access and visitor experience while maintaining the integrity of the inundated areas.
• Enhanced Eco-tourism Opportunities - through the rehabilitation of the visitor's zone facilitating greater access to the Mason River Protected Area Game to include refurbishing of the gazebo & restrooms
• Increased Awareness on the Importance and Preservation of the PA – by exposing locals, students and visitors to the beauty and function of the Protected Area whilst building support for the protection and conservation of the environment and creating a platform for livelihood opportunities.
