Maximizing Agroecology and Reforestation for Sustainable Agricultural Livelihood- A Case Study of Sierra Greenfields Agricultural Cooperatives, Senehun, Kamajei Chiefdom, Moyamba District.
Maximizing Agroecology and Reforestation for Sustainable Agricultural Livelihood- A Case Study of Sierra Greenfields Agricultural Cooperatives, Senehun, Kamajei Chiefdom, Moyamba District.
The project is implemented by Sierra Greenfields a profitable agribusiness that engages local communities (out-growers- mainly women and young people) and explores innovations that are driven by technology and sustainable agricultural practices. This project is a pilot agro-ecology in vegetable production at a village called Senehun as a nucleus farm site for their out-growers, by producing organic fertilizers from bio-fertilizers making machinery and vermicomposting. In addition, Greenfields will conduct tree planting on 2 km riparian deforested vegetation of Tibei River that runs along 10 communities in the Kamajei chiefdom. Tree planting will also include the planting of organic herbicide trees (Neem Tree) and fertilizer tree (Gliricidia sp). Since women are the main target beneficiaries, the project will mainstream Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) education including HIV and AIDS, and public health pandemics such as COVID-19.

It is expected that this project will contribute to increasing the rural household income of our women out-growers; build skills and knowledge in organic vegetable farming; restore riparian vegetation thereby restoring the erratic Tibei River water levels; and increased women’s access to SRHR education and services.

Project Characteristics and Results
Policy Impact
Community Stakeholders of Kamajei Chiefdom have officially declared no charcoal harvesting in the Chiefdom effective 30th September 2021. This ban will be complemented by reforestation activities through-out the Chiefdom. Tree planting on a depleted ecosystem (water catchment area) resonates to the wider community effort to reforest their community. Community women who are members of Sierra Greenfield (SGF) Cooperatives will conduct the tree planting and maintenance exercise.
Capacity - Building Component
Sierra Greenfields has consistently engaged in tree planting exercise with funding from the Ministry of Environment. Overall, the organization has a strong community participation in our farming practices, and thus our out-grower scheme model. The model is one typical of building the resilience of communities towards food self-sufficiency and sustainable income generation.
