Community Action towards Sustainable Piggery Waste Management, Energy Generation and Organo-Fertilizer Production in Lagos State, Nigeria
Community Action towards Sustainable Piggery Waste Management, Energy Generation and Organo-Fertilizer Production in Lagos State, Nigeria
The project main goal is to improve environmental health and livelihoods of pig farmers through an integrated piggery waste management.
A pig produces on average 1kg of waste every day, this leads to a capacity of daily tonnage of 200,000 kilograms of manure, biogas yield of 65.0% mole dry methane and about 2MW (megawatt) of electricity or alternative source of biofuel capability from the farm estate. Severe environment and health concerns including generation of foul odor, methane, the hydrogen sulphide, ammonia and other gases emitted by unmanaged pig manure can be greatly reduced through simple sustainable technology of conversion of manure waste to biogas and organic fertilizer. This will ultimately result in improved sound waste management practice, improve energy access, reduce poverty and its co-benefits, improve community-based land degradation and ecosystem.
