Rehabilitation of the Mansion Bay to support biodiversity conservation, community use and livelihood development
Over the years Mansion bay was a picnic spot for the community of Nicola town and because of hurricanes our bay have been eroded and coconut trees uprooted and the pasture is over grown with bushes. We propose to restore the area to what it was before; the first aim being the replanting of the coconut trees along the beach area; Along with coconut trees, we will also include plants that can provide shade, a habitat for birds and insects and also trees that also help to keep the soil together e.g. seaside almond, sea grapes and also beach mahoe.
The beach has always been fairly rocky and this has worsened over the years; We plan to use some of the rocks, found along the entire beach area to create wading pools for persons;
We hope it will go back to being a place where locals and tourist can visit / recreation.
We will embark on a widespread community awareness campaign as we want to involve as many persons from the community as possible to be a part of the project.
We will engage the technical services of the departments of planning, environment and agriculture to assist us in determining the proper type and placement of plants and the wading pools.
The Department of tourism will also be contacted to provide guidance on any signage we may install to encourage persons to use the Bay area for recreation.
Community members will assist in the construction of the benches and huts as part of the development of the picnic areas.
