UP!
The title refers to 'increase', as encapsulated within the principal aims of the project - to increase environmental awareness- to increase environmental good practice- to increase local capacity to underwrite sustainability of achievements- to involve and empower the Seychelles community, specifically – though not exclusively – the community of cultural actors. To work closely with schools and higher educational establishments, the tourism industry (through the Seychelles Hospitality and Tourism Association) and the arts community to achieve, in a practical and publicly engaging manner, a significant increase in the appreciation of environmental sustainability in Seychelles. For this to be realised through the creation and installation of major public art works – notably sculpture, installations, murals and video – all site specific and located to deliver maximum exposure for educational, aesthetic and motivational messages concerning environmental sustainability in Seychelles.
The Project context stands beneath the arch of sustainability.
Environmental sustainability is a major concern globally and Seychelles has responded to the challenges associated with this concept through the following, non-inclusive actions:
• The formation of the Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Foundation, closely linked to the SHTA and dedicated to moving Seychelles towards Destination Sustainability Accreditation within 5 years.
• Research projects linked to sustainability, most recently the establishment of a waste management assessment project organised by the SSTF. SAPF has good connectivity with the research team and would use knowledge thus generated to inform art work being made at the centre of our project.
