Post-Bonn Climate Accountability Advocates
The SIDS Youth AIMS Hub - Seychelles, is the Seychelles chapter of a regional youth-led organization that unites young people from the Atlantic, Indian Ocean Mediterranean and South China Sea (AIMS) region to promote and advance sustainable development through youth-led projects. The Seychelles Chapter was officially registered in January 2015 and has been in operation for three years running youth-led designed and implemented projects. Its primary focus has been on climate change, oceans and renewable energy. The organisation seeks funding from GEF SGP for the creation of a pool of young ‘Climate Accountability Advocates.’ This engages citizens, between 15 to 30 years old, in the climate change national and international processes as well as playing an active role in the delivery of the SDGs through monitoring and tracking the implementation of SDG 13 and related sustainability goals (SDG 7, 14 and 15) and the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) of the Government of Seychelles.

The use of the data will be multi-fold including the creation of quarterly newsletters, annual reports, infographics and a dashboard on a website and mobile app. The use of the information can be used by stakeholders for multiple purposes which includes, use as a baseline for 2017, a source of data for research on current policies and an assessment of the success of the implementation of SDGs and NDCs. This data can also be used by the Government of Seychelles in their reporting obligations pursuant to the Paris Agreement. This initiative serves to address the paucity of data, a lack of a monitoring mechanism of the implementation of NDCs and SDGs and a critical role for young people (non-State actors) to play in decision-making processes as the data can then translate into evidence-based advocacy.
