Solar Energy for Home Electrification in Asmahen Village, Socotra
Asmahen village located on the main paved road links Hadibu and Momi plateau N 12°35´.349 E 54°13´.391 in eastern Socotra. The village hilly topography allows rich natural landscape with many endemic plant species. In the Asmahen live 30 families and a population of 224 inhabitants (118 females and 106 males).
The main occupation of the community is herding livestock, fishing and other various professions. The village has no access to main grid electricity hence relay on medium generator (15 KW) to provide their electricity at night for several hours.
The aim of the project is to assist Asmahen village community to replace their limited sourece of electricity run by conventional fuel with solar energy. This will enable them to save financial resources (cost of fuel) and reduce carbon emission to the environment. The project will enhance community livelihood through the followings:
- Providing a continuous source of electricity.
- Save financial resources US$ 88 /family/year.
- Avoid CO 10 tonnes/year.
- Ensuring project sustainability through the establishment of revolving fund.
The project will assist the raising awareness of community members about the environment in General and climate change in particular through a number of workshops to be held in the village and attended by men and women.

Notable Community Participation
Asmahen is a small village with 30 households live there. Project is implemented by youth including women.Both youth and women are involved in implementing and benefiting from the project.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Each house hold in the village will access lighting using renewable energy. The project will save each family US$ 80 per year. This amount will be used by each family to improve their economy and livelihood.
