Rain-water Harvest in Shiphon Slopes, Hadibu Dist. Socotra Governorate, Yemen
Shiphon Heights is the southern parts of Diksam plateau descending south towards the western parts of Nojid plain. The region is deserted from Villages as all communities live in the coastal area in Bedhola and neighboring villages influence by the availability of social services e.g. Schools, health clinics and roads.
Project’ beneficiaries are mainly herders who practice grazing in Shiphon heights. There are 307 families with a population 1550 (868 females and 779 males). Ship and Goats are the main animals grazed the shiphon heights and employ ca. 50% of the communities whereas the rest are working in fisheries and other minor activities.
The project aimed at assisting local herders of building 102 rain-water harvesting cisterns “Karieves” with approximate capacity of 2200 cubic meters. The water is principally use as drinks for animals. The availability of water for animal to drink in the Rangelands where they are grazed reduce animal movement traveling between their grazing ground and the water sources in lower elevation ground. This will reduce overgrazing in areas close to water resources as well as reducing fragile soil erosion caused by animal movement.
Environmental awareness rising is required to increase community awareness of the role of the importance of practicing rangelands' management for conservation of biological resources and sustainable livelihood. The estimated area benefit from the project exceed 100 square kilometers. Further, project assist local community to build their capacity in rain-water harvesting techniques.
