Climate Change Adaptation through Sustainable Livelihoods
Climate Change Adaptation through Sustainable Livelihoods
This project seeks to “reduce the rate of mangrove forest loss while strengthening the livelihoods of forest dependent communities in the mangrove areas of Cross River State.”
The project has 4 specific objectives:
(i) Increase the area of mangrove forest under sustainable management in target communities
(ii) Strengthen awareness of and capacity for climate change mitigation
(iii) Increase income among fishing households in the participating community(s).
(iv) Reduce mangrove fuelwood consumption.

It will be implemented in EsineUfotEyamba and IkotEkriba, neighboring communities of Akpabuyo local government area of Cross River state. The project aims to address the challenges of unsustainable harvesting of mangrove forest and poverty in thesemangrove-forest-dependent communities where poverty is driven by fish stock depletion as a result of degradation of mangrove spawning grounds. Mangrove timber logging for sale and fuelwood are also among the human activities which contribute to mangrove forest depletion.

The expected outcomes of the project include the following.
? Increased the area of mangrove forest under sustainable management through forest management planning, community mobilisation, improved law enforcement and sustainable use of mangroves.
? Increased public awareness through environmental education on the importance of mangroves and mangrove preservation and reforestation
? Increased diversification of livelihood options across 2 communities through livelihood enhancement activities.
