Promoting Renewable Energy Technology among youths and women and youths in Ugwaku Community
Promoting Renewable Energy Technology among youths and women and youths in Ugwaku Community
Ugwaku Community is located in Okigwe LGA of Imo State. The community has about 10,000 inhabitants according to the 2006 population census, more than 60% of whom are women and youths. The community like most rural communities in Nigeria has no access to clean energy. Energy source options for households in the community are often limited to consuming firewood and biomass. This is contributing to deforestation and land degradation with the accompanying climatic change whch is affecting the environment and living and livelihood. Although renewable energy has the potential to satisfy the energy needs of the community the widespread application of these technologies is blocked by series of obstacles around technical, social/institutional and financial challenges. The women and youths are most affected as a result of the aforementioned. Yet they can and should play an active role in the planning, producing, supplying and managing of energy.

This project seeks to promote the Adoption of Renewable Energy Technology among women and youths in Ugwaku community as a fundamental means to address climate change and community development. At the end of the project, the following outcomes are expected:
• 100 houses will be provided with electricity through solar
• six bio digesters will be constructed to provide bio gas for cooking
• at least 500 energy efficient wood stoves produced,
• 500 indigenous economic trees planted.
• 55 people trained as renewable energy skilled technology.
