Bucaiyavu Agricultural Biodiversity and Productivity Restoration Initiative
Bucaiyavu Agricultural Biodiversity and Productivity Restoration Initiative
A lack of alternative livelihood options left peninsula communities highly dependent on logging concessions for income, while the limited availability of flat land drove agriculture ever further into the forest. Many challenges remain for the community in its defense of its cultural and natural heritage; most notably in the shape of persistent threats from commercial exploitation of the forest. The COMDEKS project has mitigated this dependence on logging and provided restoration initiative and a suite of alternative, sustainable livelihood options for the local population especially for the community of Bucaiyavu who have depended on logging concessions for a number of years. The expected results of the project would be the restoration of logged areas and the lifting out of the logging concessions for its future generation.
Due to the remoteness of the target landscape and lesser development on production ideas, the community of Bucaiyavu has opted to upskill their knowledge through awareness and training provided by partners. Services provided by experts from NGOs are vital options for empowering these local communities.
