Climate Smart wetland rehabilitation and agro-ecology
This project aims to rehabilitate areas in two wetlands on South Mahe and use the large volume of invasive plant material that will be removed to generate bio-safe organic fertilizer through climate-smart aerobic composting, working with the local farmers and community members. As such, this project directly supports Component 1 of the Country Strategy “Community Landscape and Seascape Conservation” and will contribute to both outputs 1.1: Improve conservation and sustainable use, and management of important terrestrial and coastal/marine ecosystems through implementation of community based landscape/seascape approaches, and output 1.2: Maintain globally significant biodiversity and the ecosystem goods and services that it provides to society. The project also supports the concepts behind Component 2 “Climate Smart Innovative Agro-ecology” in that it will enhance water retention of wetlands thus buffering flooding as well as providing organic soil enrichment from locally produced compost thus introducing a sustainable agricultural practice and promoting local organic farming.
