Inspiring National Sea Turtle Stewardship, biodiversity preservation and sustainable tourism development through the voluntary certification program CERTIFIED TURTLE APPROVED
The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis hosts four sea turtle species: hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead, and green. These turtles are long-lived, highly migratory animals that possess significant appeal to tourists visiting the island in addition to helping maintain a healthy ocean environment off of our coasts. All four species are included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (2015) as Vulnerable (leatherback), Endangered (loggerhead and green), or Critically Endangered (hawksbill) and face many challenges to their survival. Locally, some of these threats include an open fishing season for sea turtles in St. Kitts and Nevis (October 1st through February 28th annually), sand mining, vehicular traffic, and development on nesting beaches. As a result of threats, both natural and man made, only one in every 1,000 hatchlings will live long enough to reach adulthood and return to St. Kitts to nest on our beaches. Due to the increase in tourism and coastline development here in St. Kitts and Nevis, the sea turtles that come ashore to nest on our beaches and forage in our surrounding waters may now find it more difficult to do so successfully. With this in mind, the CERTIFIED TURTLE APPROVED PROGRAM (CTAP) was developed for businesses interested in conserving the sea turtle population of St. Kitts and Nevis.
