Implementation of low costs technology for biogas generation from animal manure: An alternative source of renewable energy
Implementation of low costs technology for biogas generation from animal manure: An alternative source of renewable energy
Environmental degradation (air, soil and water pollution) are increasingly being considered as focal points for research and development. The integration of livestock manure is seen as the most appropriate way to use the natural resources in a system that is productive and sustainable. In such a system the processing of the livestock manure by anaerobic digestion is a key component as it has many positive features such as reduction in emission of methane (a major factor in global warming), decrease in pathogens (better health of people and animals), production of biogas for farm lighting, and improved nutrient recycling (reduced need for chemical fertilizer).

The Cuban Kittitian Association plans to produce biogas by installing two bio digester, then use the energy for lighting and other purposes on the farm. Organic fertilizer will also be created in the process and will be used on the farm for small scale crop production.
It is the intention of our group to share the necessary technology/information with the other pork production farmers in the Conaree area. Presently, there is no electricity in the area, and farmers have suffered due to the inability to complete tasks at nights. We anticipate a full scale replication by December 2016 and a significant reduction in pollution of the environment and ecosystem.
The success of the project will be measured based on the tones of biogas produced and the volume of organic manure that we are able to apply to hectares of land in St Kitts and Nevis.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Meetings were held with farmers within the livestock area.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
Pig farming has potential for expansion but not without the negative consequences of this agricultural activity. The project therefore seeks to demonstrate that pig farming can be carried out in a sustainable manner with little environmental degradation and little increased negative effects on climate change.
