Community Water Harvesting and Storage Initiative in Vuna, Taveuni Island
Community Water Harvesting and Storage Initiative in Vuna, Taveuni Island
This project seeks to increase home rainwater harvesting practices in the district of Vuna on the island of Taveuni. It will also educate the community about the need for rainwater harvesting as a reliable means of supplementing treated water supply, and a current desalination plant. This is especially important for this island community who faces potable water issues because of the low water table as well as unsustainable land use practices and poor water management habits.
The objectives of the project are; Rehabilitation of traditional bathing pools; Provision of safe access to drinking water through the setting up rain water harvesting units; Training and establishing a CBO to execute rain water harvesting implementation; Coastal replanting to adapt to coastal degradation and washing away of shoreline.
