Strengthening Capacities in Seascape Conservation and Management within the Belize Federation of Fishers
Strengthening Capacities in Seascape Conservation and Management within the Belize Federation of Fishers
Project goal: Improved Seascape Conservation and Management by Increasing Capacities within the Belize Federation of Fishers.

Purpose: The project is designed to increase the institutional and individual capacities of the fisher associations who will then be able to contribute to seascape conservation and management.

The project has two objectives:

Objective A: Institutional Development of the Associations of the BFF

Objective B: Strengthening the Capacity of Fishers in Sustainable Fishing and Management Practices.

These objectives follow a strategic plan for the development of each member association which will translate into increased membership and thus strengthen the voice of the BFF. The sequential order of the activities are deliberate. They are intended to build upon training already completed and develop each association through the implementation of a gradual increase in the level of training packages. The planning of these training packages is the framework that will ensure effective participation from all associations that will see the collaborative, participatory management and conservation of Belize’s seascape.

This project directly targets fishers, their children and wives from all fishing communities that BFF represents. The direct inclusion of 150 fishers from the target communities will further enhance community participation in management as well as further the BFFs three primary mandate of education, capacity building, and advocacy. At the end of this project local community members and fishers will have developed their capacities through intensive workshops and practical training.

This project supports the implementation of the GEF SGP Strategic Initiative “Community Landscape and Seascape Conservation” under the project category of Capacity Development, and also contributes to the COMPACT Programme Phase II Site Strategy which outlines three specific objectives. Of these, objective 2 of the strategy is: “To promote the protection, conservation and sustainable use of the resources of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System-World Heritage Site by community groups, community based organizations and the general public.” This project seeks to enhance management capacities of those who are the direct stakeholders and users of these resources. In working with each fishing community, the BFF will offer a learning experience that will affect the use of the resource. It will seek to change old fishing practices and incorporate new sustainable management tools in their everyday fishing activities and promote environmental awareness and seascape management among its member associations for a sustainable fishing industry.

Expected Results:

? 150 fishers have participated in hands on learning experience
? BFF associations acquire necessary equipment for training workshops, office management and support.
? BFF acquires necessary equipment for direct support
? Fishers have learned about the importance of marine protected areas and conservation
? All association under the umbrella are sharing their experience of the BBRRS-WHS in their communities
