Water-use Efficiency for Women Gardens in Eastern Qa’rah villages, Nujid, Hadibo, Socotra, Yemen
Eastern Qa’rah Villages are the 16 villages located on the road to the end of the Nugid plain close to Ra’s Qatanen. These villages are: Mawqaher, Deashbaq, Amaleh, Ajman, Hazahez, Jihindad, Maqa’hi, Desmaho, Ashwaq, Boota/Batah, Rawakhen, Maqa’ha, Eamta, Matahez, and Sibraho. All villages have access to continuously (24 hours) flowing water through one or two polyethylene 1” pipes. The daily water delivery varies from one to another due to distance from source, pipes condition, time of day (night flow is higher than the day) and availability in the sources. Seasonal variation of water availability said not to be significant. The average daily share per family was found to be 2.9 cubic meters per family. The project will help women in building 155 water tanks with capacity of 6m3. for storing and cooling water for home uses and gardening.
The project aims are:
9. Rationalization of water use in 16 villages (153 household and 2 schools)
10. Reduce women labour in water management, storing and uses
11. Enable women to use access water for income generation activities
12. Cooling delivered heated water (in Polyethylene pipes) in mid-days hours for safe use
13. Women capacity building in home gardens development and livelihood improvement.
14. Enable 153 women (households) to secure additional income from vegetables sales
15. Raise environmental awareness among communities in 16 villages in eastern Qarah’
16. Ensure project sustainability.
