Sustainable Agriculture and Livelihood Value Enhancement (SALVE) Project
Sustainable Agriculture and Livelihood Value Enhancement (SALVE) Project
The St. Christopher Children’s Home was established since 1950 and is a NGO committed to providing a safe, secure and nurturing environment designed to harness, develop and sustain the hopes, talents and aspirations of children through programmes that address the holistic development of those whose best interest would only be served and promoted by placement in residential care as a result of potential or actual harm in their own home or community. The NGO has sought over the years to develop projects that have been beneficial to the residents and the nearby Trafalgar Community.

In an effort to supplement the food requirements of the residents of the Home, attempts have been made over the years to establish a vegetable garden along with the planting of different species of fruit trees on the grounds. Unfortunately, efforts have been thwarted by a large population of monkeys that destroy most of the crops planted. The residents of the home will be schooled in the methodologies of sustainable agriculture under cover. This will help to encourage an appreciation for agriculture which might lead to a livelihood activity for residents when they leave the home.

Additionally, the residents have not been immune to the effects of climate change, and have been on the receiving end of an erratic water supply in recent years, especially after storm events.

The St. Christopher wishes to apply to SGP for a grant to establish an undercover garden that would be effective in reducing monkey damage to crops. The group also wishes to establish a system of water harvesting that would provide water both for the irrigating of the crops planted and provide an emergency supply of water when necessary
