Preservation of the Brejo: Reunion With Ancestral Culture, Medicinal and Recognition of the Bau community.

Protection of the brejo area, creating a conservation area. Recovery of degraded areas with fire, planting native fruit trees, in a total of six hectares. Preserving and sharing the knowledge of traditional quilombola territory, plants and their traditional and medicinal uses. Building a Community structure for meetings, gatherings, culturas rituals, craft workshops among other cultural events.

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Family farming will become possible with higher availability of spaces for agroecological practices, enabling plantation of various plant species and conservation of medicinal plants. The project will also result in creating physical spaces for discussing community necessities, rights and bringing fourth traditional quilombola knowledge in order to preserve natural and human cultures.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Global environmental problems will hopefully be included in the conscience communities by means of traditional plant management and the improvements brought about by it. Small-scale projects which bring better solutions, with respect for the environment, in comparison to large projects favoring large capital.

Notable Community Participation

The project considers 34 families involved in the community totaling up to 139 traditional quilombola residents. We hope that with the claiming of the territory many other family members will return to the community and farmlands of Santana, Araçuí, in the northern Jequitinhonha Valley region of Minas Gerais.

Policy Impact

This project intends to contribute to construction of public policy more fitting to address social and environmental issues regarding quilombola life and territory.

Gender Focus

This project proposal was assembled by both men and women, 31 of the members are men and 28 women.

Capacity - Building Component

Workshops will be conducted as a means of educating members of the community in terms of preservation and quilombola rights. Community activities enclosing plant species and agroecological practices and agroforestry systems; detailed planning for irrigation and planting strategies, managing necessities for the development of medicinal plants.

Project Results

Project directly benefited 124 people: 73 women, 20 young and 8 elderly, 51 men, 25 young and 5 elderly;
It was built and equipped a shed in the community, with bathroom and kitchen where meetings and community celebrations have been held;
7 workshops on handicrafts, Afro dance, capoeira and cataloging of medicinal plants, territory and religious rescue, association and project management - TOO ALL 124 people were trained, 75 women and 49 men
The swamp area was no longer used for animal husbandry and was fenced off;
In all, 96 hectares are managed with traditional crops, extractive management and natural regeneration;
Three furnaces were built for clay crafts, rescuing an old culture from the community;
A water tank was built to improve access to water for families;
The community strengthened its link with the quilombo Córrego Narciso do Meio and with the indigenous community Pankararu / Pataxó;
A booklet was produced telling the history of the community, based on the work of recording and retrieving the stories made by the young people, as part of the project's actions. One thousand copies were distributed.
