Use of solar energy for home electrification in Abataroh, Nujid, Socotra
Abbataroh village is located in Nujid coastal plain south of Socotra near “Mahatah”. It can be reach by car via the main road going from Hadibu to Matyaf. The community main occupation is fishing and herding livestock. Abbataroh is considered as a new settlement likewise many other settlements in the Nujid plains. The reason is that due to social and economic activities people built up their permanent residences in the coast due to availability of services like schools, health clinics and roads.
Current limited electricity is provided from a number of fuel run generators. Community are convinced that operating fuel-run generators is not economically and environmentally viable hence are interested in using renewable energy for domestic lighting.
The project will benefit 50 household, including 62 families and 400 inhabitants. The project will assist local community in Abbataroh to acquire solar systems for home electrification. The project will save the environment 30 tons of CO2 per year. Community are aware of the importance of project sustainability hence a revolving fund mechanism will be initiated. Environmental awareness will be raised among community towards environmental sustainability, CO2 reduction and climate change.
