Notable Community Participation

The agricultural frontier has reflected negatively in the social and environmental aspects of Carolina, Maranhão. A total of 34 families from the community will participate in order to grow production and improve income of the local families who live in the Cerrado region. Through the means of new technologies and capacity building in farming practices.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will invest in technical assistance and consultants to form new contexts of family farming in the association, amplifying potentialities of profit and quality of life through the process of management and commercialization of fruit pulps.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

These activities serve as an example for the entire local population which sees results in the production and information dissemination among the local communities.

Project Results

- 01 community association with strengthened management;
- 34 people involved in the project (03 young people, 19 women);
- 29 people trained throughout the project in: management process and associative enterprise, simplified market study, good practices in food manufacturing and processing of fruit pulp;
- 70.4 hectares under sustainable use (extractivism). The area is distributed as follows: 48 ha Bacaba Region, 14.9 ha Canto do Remanso and 7.5 ha Region da Solta;
- 3.25 tons of fruit collected between September 2016 and January 2017, which yielded 2.15 tons of pulps produced;
- 06 species being collected and processed (acerola, red guava, cashew, cajá, araçá and juçara);
- In 2017 a contract was signed with the city of Carolina to supply pulps to the PNAE for the commercialization of 6 tons of pulps. The PNAE pays the price of R $ 10.50 / kg of pulp, which represents R $ 63,000.00 of gross revenues for 2017;
- Participation of 03 ABM farmers at the AGRITEC, held in Paraibano-MA, from 06 to 08 April 2017;
- political articulation with the partners of the Cerrado Sul Maranhense Territory;
- production of a video documentary on the history of ABM, released regionally (copy in the project folder);
- a project published in the Radio and Television Good News (Balsas / MA) in February 2017, about ABM's experience with the full exploitation of the Cerrado's natural resources and the socioeconomic impacts on income from extractivism.
