Community Livelihood Improvement in Steroo, Nujid, Socotra, Yemen

Steroo village is the largest village in Nujid, southern Socotra and can be reached through the main road Hadibu- Nujid-Qa’rah. There live 115 families with a total population of 1500 inhabitants. Local community main occupations are fishing and herding livestock. Water resources (potable) is the main constraint to community livelihood. The only source of potable water is a distance spring that deliver very limited quantities of water and get dried up in the dry season. Women faced difficulty storing water using plastic containers and barrels that made water unsafe to drink.
Community proposed to build 49 rain-water harvest tanks with total capacity of 2345 cubic meters. These are spread in the Rangeland to provide drinking water for livestock and human.
Women proposed to build 111 domestic water tanks each of 6 cubic meters capacity in their attempts to mange scarce potable water resources and maintain its quality for domestic uses.
The project will target 160 men and women towards improving environmental conservation, natural resources management and awareness.

Policy Impact

Project is in line with national policies to improve water supply in rural and remote areas. The project also in line with national policies towards improving rural livelihood in remote areas to slow rural migration towards urban areas.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Project is strongly oriented towards improving community livelihood through rain-water harvest that will allow water availability to livestock and human in the Rangeland. The domestic water tanks will help women managing water resources for domestic uses. Hence, alleviating women from hard work storing water in plastic containers and also maintain water quality to be potable. The project will directly benefit 111 women households benefiting from the domestic water tanks and 633 families from water harvest.

Policy Influence

Rain-water harvest will enable 633 families and 1800 inhabitants to secure basic water needs for their families and livestock.

Linkages gef projects

Socotra had been a target for large GEF projects related to biodiversity conservation and its governance. This project is in support of full size previously implemented projects through consolidation of their impact and providing incentives to communities for their conservation efforts.

Notable Community Participation

Streo community is participating very well in project design and implementation. Women are responsible for executing the domestic water tanks where as men responsible for the executing of Rain-water tanks.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project will raise awareness among equal number of men and women. Awareness will address water management, environment and climate change. Eighty men and Eighty women will be reached during project.

Replication of project activities

This project is a replication of previous success in solving water shortage problem in Socotra.

Project sustainability

Water and its tools are the most valued means for survival in Socotra. Hence the maintenance and management of water is in the full consensus of communities. Since their investment in the project reaching 84% indicate signs that project results would be sustained.

Project Results

1. Building 49 rain-water harvest bodies (Karieves) with approximate water holding capacity of 2350 cubic meters. This will provide all required water for livestock and human while outside the village.
2. Building 111 water tanks at homestead to store domestic water supply and save women from burden managing domestic water supply that is already in short supply.
3. Increase community awareness of water management, Sanitation, Biodiversity and climate change. Eighty women and Eighty men will be reached through this activities.
