Community Livelihood Improvement in Steroo, Nujid, Socotra, Yemen
Steroo village is the largest village in Nujid, southern Socotra and can be reached through the main road Hadibu- Nujid-Qa’rah. There live 115 families with a total population of 1500 inhabitants. Local community main occupations are fishing and herding livestock. Water resources (potable) is the main constraint to community livelihood. The only source of potable water is a distance spring that deliver very limited quantities of water and get dried up in the dry season. Women faced difficulty storing water using plastic containers and barrels that made water unsafe to drink.
Community proposed to build 49 rain-water harvest tanks with total capacity of 2345 cubic meters. These are spread in the Rangeland to provide drinking water for livestock and human.
Women proposed to build 111 domestic water tanks each of 6 cubic meters capacity in their attempts to mange scarce potable water resources and maintain its quality for domestic uses.
The project will target 160 men and women towards improving environmental conservation, natural resources management and awareness.
