Construction of waste disposal systems to reduce Land Erosion and mitigate the impact of Climate Change in Sansali and Lawshi-daji communities in Akko LGA Gombe State, Nigeria
The community is made up of about 10-15 thousand people who are mostly farmers and herders. The goal of the project is ‘To Reduce Land degradation caused by human activities through indiscriminate waste disposal. It is expected that the project will help to accomplish reduction of land degradation as well as climate change mitigation basically by reducing domestic waste burning and indiscriminate waste disposal which to a large extent causes blockage to the limited drainages, which eventually causes ill health to the populace, also increasing the dangers of erosion and flooding which is a major challenge in Akko LGA. TEMIN will organize advocacy visits to Gombe State Ministries of Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Women Affairs, Community leaders and Women Leaders in a bid to gain support for the project. In addition, a one-day mass campaign in each of the 2 communities in Akko LGA will be carried out to sensitize them on the consequences of indiscriminate waste disposal. TEMIN will produce IEC materials such as 2,000 T-Shirts and caps, fliers-500, bill boards, placards carrying campaign messages on them etc. Women groups /association, youth groups, community leaders as well as community members will be part of this event to give it the attention it deserves. There will be a two days training/capacity building on Waste Management for 50 participants from the 2 communities. After the training a Community Based Waste Management Committee (CBWMC) will be formed to serve as monitors throughout the project and beyond to checkmate indiscriminate wastes disposal. The project will build the capacity of (100) One Hundred rural women and men, who will in turn become trainers on alternative ways of disposing and converting these waste into manure and other useful materials such as handbags from corn maize waste which will contribute to their livelihood economically.
