"PROMOTING ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH MORINGA BIOGEL PRODUCTION FOR DOMESTIC ENERGY USE IN NIGERIA "
Ijaiye –Ile is a community of subsistence farmers of about 10,000 people with poor rainfall challenges, scarcity of wtaer and depend on only rain fed agricultural products. Majority use firewood and kerosene for cooking. This project will utilize applied research findings to maximize the benefits of Moringa oleifera to produce Moringa Bio-gel as an alternative source of energy for household cooking in the community in order to reduce the carbon di-oxide generated from burning firewood This will be achieved through conservation of Biodiversity by planting an additional 500,000 Moringa trees on the cooperative farmland at Ijaiye –Ile by the Women Farmer co-operative which was set up in Ijaiye with a start –up grant from the Virginia Gildersleeve Fund and VIDSA MULTIVENTURES LIMITED, to serve as a raw material base for the Bio-gel production Laboratory that will be established. Project activities include Training of 100 Moringa farmers, Plant 500,000 stands of Moringa oleifera trees, Establishment of a research laboratory, Production of 200 litres of Bio gel/week from the 9th month of project implementation, Generate data on environmental protection and sustainable livelihoods, Dissemination of project findings, Awareness creation and Mobilization of community members to reduce cooking with firewood. The community is ready to donate a 10 acre farmland on which moringa will be planted and leaves generated will be bought by VIDSA MULTIVENTURES while the petiole rejects from the leaves will be used to produce biofuel gel. These combined project activities output will produce a sustainable alternative energy source, sustainable environment & enhanced community quality of life measurable with outcome indicators below.
