BUILDING MANGROVE FOREST COMMUNITIES AND CSOs RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND MANGROVE CONSERVATION IN ESUK MBA COMMUNITY IN AKPABUYO LGA OF CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA
Building Mangrove Forest Community’s/CSOs Response to Climate Change and Mangrove Conservation in Cross River state is a dedicated project that will be implemented in Akpabuyo Local Government Areas of Cross River State.
The project will contribute to the reduction of carbon emission and encourage the use of alternative energy sources and promote environmental conservation at the grassroots level, through energy/environment/climate change education to schools and communities, training young persons on simple techniques of alternative energy source, carry out demonstration in the construction of simple improved cook stove with local materials, thus reducing the impact of carbon emission and climate change in Nigeria.
The project will raise nursery of 3,000 stands of mangrove seedlings and plant them in total land area of 1 hectare in 5 project communities.
The mangrove species will be nursed and trans-planted will be Rhizophora mangle (Red mangrove) and Avicennia germinans (Black mangrove) because they are native species here in Cross River State.
It is expected this project will bring about the following outcome during and after the implementation;
1). Over 5,000 members of the communities and public to benefit from environmental conservation and climate change adaptation education. 2). 3,000 mangrove seedlings raised and planted in 5 project communities covering a total area of 1 hectare to upgrade degraded mangrove forest sites. 3). Over 20 young persons from the 5 project communities are able to construct and teach other fuel wood efficient cook stove , thus reducing quantities of mangrove wood utilised for fuel, as well as reduction in carbon emission.
4). 45 youths benefit from climate change, environmental conservation and leadership skills youth training camp and their capacity built to be change agents within and outside their communities, as a result of being environmentally conscious and emerging leaders.
5). 20 youths from the 5 communities are able to connect and install simple solar plate for mini energy use for phone charging and for radio
The Cross River State government of Nigeria is interested in climate change mitigation; as a result she has adopted the REDD strategies. So this project will contribute to the overall goal of Cross River State government regarding REDD.
