Promotion of low-carbon technologies to combat climate change : South West Mt. Kenya region
MDI is an NGO implementing pro-poor development, ecological conservation and suitable livelihoods projects in south west region of Mt Kenya. The specific objectives of the projects are:
a) to reduce carbon emission emanating from wood fuel and charcoal by at least 2,710 tons of avoided carbon dioxide through installation of 100 units of twelve cubic meters biogas plant, installation of energy-efficient cook stoves in 1,00 women-led household and distribution of 100 solar lighting kit in needy houses.
b) To increase land under tree cover by at least 100ha, for carbon sequestration through agroforestry in at least 1,000 farms of 1/4 acre each and support 1/2 acre woodlots in 20 public primary schools.
c) To increase local resilient to climate change in community by increasing the adaptive capacity to climate change through training.
The rationale behind this project is to encourage diffusion of innovation and technologies that are essential in adapting climate change at the level of local communities who in many cases have contributed to climate change.
