Women Gardens Development in Manafou, Hadibo, Socotra
Since long time and for several reasons Socotra lack vegetable and fruit supplies. Of the reasons are the environmental (drought period and monsoon), geographical (its long distance from mainland) and its isolation for five months. Doe to such factors there is no readily available vegetable and fruit on the island in its market. Further the lengthy dry seasons and the lack of knowledge on agriculture practices are added complication.
Manafou Village located at the outskirt of Hadibu, the capital of Socotra. Due to its limited water resources community of Manafou village known for their agricultural gardens activities for sale and domestic uses. Despite this, activities are limited to one major vegetable crop of tomatoes that is difficult to store especially at peak of season.
The project aimed at raising capacity of women through training of cultural practices of various vegetable crops, marketing and storage. Such activities provide 75 families (481) an opportunity for income generation and livelihood improvement.
