Rain-water Harvest and Rangeland improvement in lower Shibiro, Diksam, Socotra, Yemen
The “Shibirow” region of Diskam plateau extends westword to reach Qabehaten region. It constitutes all the inner hillslopes and wadis desending westwards reaching Qabehaten. The wadi extend through to reach “Detror”. The region intersected with wadis that discharge its rain water to Wadi “Detror” reaching the sea at “Salmaho”. Community are solely herders of livestock hence water constitue their sole need to maintain their livelihood.
The project aims at assisting local communities to harvest rain water into a ground dug and built water cisterns that enable its use most of the year till it depleted. The intended 60 water harvest bodies of various sizes and capacity of 4150 cubic meters benfiting 250 families and 1440 inhabitants and their livestock. The main users of water are grazing animals that is considered the sole support for communities’ livelihood.
Project will help increase community awareness, environmental degradation. The communities will establish 20 inclosures for saving pressurized species to re seed rangeland.
