Rain-water Harvest for Community Livelihood in Central Momi Plateau, Socotra
Central Momi region constitutes the middle of the higher plateau of the eastern part of Socotra(N 12? 30.673? & E 54? 24.369?). The region topography is based on limestone rock areas intersected with inter-hill plains. The region is rich in biodiversity with high endemism. Vegetation cover is mostly shrub and grassland grazed by livestock (cattle, Sheep and Goats). The region lack permanent water courses such as Wadis and springs hence water harvest is the main and reliable sources of water outside rainy season for humans and animals.
The project aimed at assisting local communities and herders to secure water supply for improving their livelihood and water for livestock. The number of benefited families is 238 with approximate population of nearly 1,460 inhabitants. The project will build 91 water cisterns with total capacity of 4,726 cubic meters.
Project will assist to raise Environmental awareness among communities towards understanding the importance of sustainable natural resources uses and conservation. Lesson learnt in neighboring north and south Momi will be examined for possible replication.
